Production Day 2

cpm35 2024-05-21 193304.319.jpg

Our first priority on day 2 was shooting the aforementioned dance shots, but the dancers we had convened with the previous day were both otherwise engaged. Hence, we contacted the dance president and requested the contact of another student, one who would be able to perform appropriately and wear the planned outfit. There was no specific choreography, but we requested a Kathak-inspired dance, and our dancer obliged. Once again employing the technique of shooting from a variety of angles, we captured a multitude of clips to later review and select from. These clips were arranged with varied lengths and angles to create a montage with the effect of a 'multi-camera shot,' without necessarily shooting with multiple cameras. From the front, we obtained a wide shot, and from the back, we captured a low-angle shot.

Next on the agenda was filming the pool scenes, for which we had to employ another student to act as the 'body double' for our lead, Huza Mubarik, who was not entirely comfortable partaking in this part. An O-level student by the name of Anabia volunteered, already possessing the swimming costume and ample time. As we were unable to use the DSLR to film around water, I volunteered my iPhone 13 Pro Max and got into the pool to film the desired clips. By observing the student's movement through the water, I determined the ideal angles at which to shoot and ensured that I had variety in my clips before declaring this part complete, owing to the difficulties of engaging students in this kind of work. The effect of 'multi-camera shot' can be observed here too, with our goal being to create the same quality and visual interest in shots without the use of multiple cameras, which were not within our budget.

Having completed filming of our office, dance, and pool shots, we were free to move on to engaging our lead, Huza Mubarik, for the lip-syncing part. Moving our work outside, we requested the help of friends including fellow students Noor and Khazina to hold up the RGB lights responsible for illuminating the scene. There was a fair bit of trial and error involved in shooting outside; the first brick wall we decided to use did not have desirable lighting, leading us to move to a different spot in the courtyard where we found it to be much more flattering.

Furthermore, we filmed part of the lip-syncing in a hallway in the basement of OPF, employing a makeshift rig consisting of an office chair on wheels pushed by a student. Huza sat in the chair and continued her part while another student flicked the lights on and off, attempting to add an interesting visual element to the scene. However, these clips proceeded to be discarded as they created dissonance when combined with the others. I will elaborate on this further in post-production.

Originally, we had planned to shoot the chess scene on day 2 as well, however, the end of the school day marked all students and helpers becoming unavailable, forcing us to move this to the next day.
